COMMITTEES

 

So much goes on at Shomrei Torah Synagogue with the help and guidance of volunteers. If you are looking for a way to become involved, meet people, and foster new relationships, we urge you to join others on any number of these committees.

Committees are listed below according to the Executive Committee member under whose purview they fall and then by alphabetical order. Chairpersons of the committees are the current chairperson but are always subject to change.

New members to the committees are always welcome!

 

President – Rob Schreiber

• Governance - tbd
o To review the current structure of the Board of Directors with a view toward developing recommendations to improve the way the Board and the Executive Committee operate.
o Meetings are held as needed.

• Nominating – tbd
o To create a slate of officers and directors to serve on the Board of Directors; to help in leadership development and training of synagogue members to take on leadership roles in the synagogue.
o Meetings typically occur in the months of February through May.

o To provide recommendations regarding Kashrut, kitchen use, catering and facility rental agreements, and policies.
o Meetings are held as needed.

o To serve as liaisons to the Board of Directors gathering information and making recommendations pertaining to the overall maintenance and operation of the facility, its grounds, furniture/ fixtures/ equipment, and capital projects.
o Meetings are held the 4th Wednesday of each month at 7:00 pm.

o Become part of a team of 5 different groups that prepare and serve Kiddush lunch after weekly Shabbat services and holiday services (each group is responsible for one Shabbat per month).
o Saturdays – 9:00 – 1:00.

o Advise upon and review agreements and contracts with a goal to have sufficient representation on this committee such that we will reach out to you sporadically.
o STS Administrator will reach out to you as needed.

o To strengthen, standardize and make STS messaging and communication friendlier across all platforms; to expand ways of communicating to members and to the community.

o To advise and make recommendations regarding the security and emergency preparedness of STS

o To provide guidance and direction to STS from a technology perspective including data security, site management systems and enterprise software.

Community

• Bikur Cholim - Stacy Stark (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.), Chair 

o To provide support in the form of meals, offers of transportation, etc. to members in need during times of sickness.
o Meetings are held as needed.

o Offers emotional support and comfort in time of loss; provides guidance in keeping with Jewish tradition for preparing the home for Shiva; organizes shiva minyan; provides meal of consolation (if necessary); provides volunteers to set up at shiva house while family is at the funeral.

o Furthering personal contacts as an outreach to our congregants; outreach during illness or injury; provides support for the bereaved during the first year of mourning; welcomes new babies into our community.

o To coordinate various social action activities that STS members take on in the community. The Social Action committee includes Imagine LA, Project Open Hands and other opportunities for Tikum Olam.

• Welcome & Integration – Adrianne Pasternak (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.), Staff Liaison
o To connect and present new members a small gift (personal call and/or visit, challah and welcome delivery) to mark their formal association with the synagogue. This includes a “mentoring meets chavurah” program, in-home Shabbat dinners with long-standing members, and the new Adopt-a-Grandparent program.

• Recruitment & Greater Community Outreach - tbd
o To seek out new arrivals to and within the community, as well as residents who are not affiliated with any local synagogue; to acquaint them with STS. This includes: social media, Bring-A-Friend, grade level chairs for ECE and JLC, Open House(s) and strategically promoted monthly Shabbat programming.

• Engagement - tbd
To encourage personal participation by all members in the synagogue, and to foster a feeling of genuine warmth in the synagogue as a second home and family through personal relationships and outreach, communication and community events. This includes seeking out marginal and inactive members and to renew their interest and participation in the synagogue family. This will further be broken down by demographics including ECE/JLC/Young Families, High School/College/Singles, Empty Nesters & Beyond and Special Needs.

• Events & Retention - tbd
To call any member who resigns while seeking to correct situations that have resulted in the resignation (ie Win-Back). This will include events that are free and open to the current members including, but not limited to, themed Havdallahs, the community picnic, a new member brunch in a member’s home, Hanukkah and Purim celebrations.

Programs

o To plan the annual Mishloach Manot fundraiser including design, communication, content, marketing and delivery of the Mishloach Manot.

o To establish legacy donations to help ensure the long term financial stability of STS.

o To plan the annual STS golf tournament, usually taking place in June of each year, and typically including a raffle and a silent auction.

o For parents to provide feedback, guidance and support for the Jewish Learning Center (JLC)

o To support Kadimah / USY; organize parent volunteers; help support fundraising and programming.

o Reviews STS financial performance against budget and financial planning; assist in the preparation of the annual budget.
o Meetings are held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7:00 pm.

o To review and provide for financial assistance to synagogue members for membership and school tuitions.

Religious - Maxine Schwartz, V.P.

o To bring the community closer together by celebrating Shabbat in each other’s homes.

o To facilitate the being of a Kehilla Kedosha, a holy community, by connecting with as many people through education, spirituality and ritual practice.
o Meetings are held on the 1st Monday of each month at 8:00 pm.
